Celebrating 10 years of same-sex marriage

On 17.07.2013, the Marriage (Same-Sex) Couples Act received Royal Assent, meaning that same-sex couples were entitled to marry in England and Wales.

The legislations provides for those who are in same-sex relationships to marry, whether in a civil ceremony or a religious one. The legalisations also offers protection to those religious organisations which do authorisation such marriages, and therefore, supporting freedom of religion to all religious organisations.

On 29 March 2014, the country witnessed same-sex marital ceremonies take place for the first time in England and Wales. According to the ONS within the first 48 hours, 95 same-sex weddings took place. Between March 2014 and October 2015, 15,000 ceremonies took place.

In this day and age, it is difficult to fathom that same-sex marriage was at one point not legal, and the Nullity of Marriage Act 1971 very much endorsed such ideology.  The radical change in the law was a much needed reform, and celebrates the notion that “love conquers all”.
